Acadia University 5th Annual Student Research and Innovation Conference
This past weekend, students, faculty and interested guests gathered to attend Acadia University’s 5th Annual Student Research and Innovation Conference. Hosted by the Acadia Graduate Students (AGS) and held at the KC Irving Centre from March 3-4, 2018, the conference offered a glimpse at the wide variety of impressive and important student research currently being conducted on campus.
Acadia graduate and undergraduate Honours students participated in the conference by delivering research talks to an engaged audience in the KCIC Auditorium or presenting their findings via informative research posters in the KCIC Garden Room. Student research presentations were evaluated by faculty members, who acted as guest judges. The following prizes were awarded at the end of the conference:
Best Graduate Presentation ($200) - Patrick Hergott, Social & Political Thought
Best Undergraduate Presentation ($200) - Janet Aucoin, Kinesiology
Best Arts & Theology Presentation ($150) - Laura Townend, Social & Political Thought
Runner-up Arts & Theology Presentation ($50) - Josh Keliher, Theology
Best Science Presentation ($150) - Olivia Raiche-Tanner, Physics
Runner-up Science Presentation ($50) - Claire Bullock, Biology
Best Professional Studies Presentation ($150) - Ella Murphy, Finance
Runner-up Professional Studies Presentation ($50) - Leif Helmer, Education
Best Poster ($150) - Tiffany Manstan, Nutrition & Dietetics
In addition to a rich program of student presentations, the conference included a keynote talk from Dr. Michael Corbett (School of Education) on the problem of reflexivity in social science research, as well as a panel discussion entitled “Perspectives of the Future,” in which Dr. Lesley Frank (Sociology), Dr. Trevor Avery (Biology and Mathematics & Statistics) and Michael Kennedy (School of Business) explored the usefulness of university degrees and how academic fields and related job markets are shifting.
