Critter Crossing: Acadia students engage in research to reduce road-kill
Acadia researcher, Trevor Avery, and his students are monitoring animal movements through and around an animal passage which is under a new highway being constructed in Antigonish County. Highways are known to be hazardous to the passage of animals, and mortality can be especially high for aquatic reptiles and amphibians.
Culverts or passageways have been shown to increase passage and reduce overall mortality in animals. Jillian Arany is a Masters student at Acadia and she’s holding a Green Frog that she caught at the field site.
