Delegation of Japanese wine buyers visit Acadia

On September 8th, Acadia University hosted a small delegation of Japanese wine buyers/influencers and local wineries for a morning of meetings, tours, and presentations.  Organized and supported through Nova Scotia Business Inc and ACOA (NS), the intent of the visit to Acadia was to provide the delegation and local wineries with knowledge of the research resources in Nova Scotia, enable wineries to meet one-on-one with buyers from Japan and allow networking between the delegation, businesses and researchers. The group heard presentations from a multidisciplinary ensemble of wine and grape-related researchers from Acadia, as well as invited researchers from Nova Scotia Community College and Université Sainte-Anne.

Japan is an extremely sophisticated wine market with tremendous potential for Nova Scotian wines.

Fostering an understanding of Nova Scotia’s wine region as one of premium grape growing, world-class wine making, and having a supportive ecosystem of government support, research expertise and infrastructure, is key to success in this market. In addition to boosting export opportunities for NS wineries, the event helps to further establish connections between the wineries, researchers and institutions in Nova Scotia, and particular Japanese Wine Regions for future collaboration opportunities.

Acadia University is playing a leadership role in Atlantic Canada’s grape and wine industry’s success by providing research, infrastructure and services, dating back to 2010.  We have growing capacity in a number of areas, including chemical analysis (highlighted by our new ALAB, a facility with some of the best institutional infrastructure for this type of work in Canada), wine economics & wine tourism, data management & data analytics, product development & sensory analysis, grapevine propagation, insect detection & mitigation, and fungal endophytes & fungal diseases.
