Acadia Centre of Lifestyle Studies (COLS) receives support for national information campaign on physical activity

The Lawson Foundation in collaboration with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, Exercise is Medicine Canada Advisory Council and its partner organizations, has awarded $115,000 in funding to Dr. Jonathon Fowles to roll out a national workshop and information campaign on physical activity and exercise prescripton to primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals. The aim is to build recognition of exercise as a therapeutic agent in the fight against chronic disease and increase the proportion of healthcare visits that include physical activity assessment counselling or prescription.

"We are grateful to the Lawson Foundation and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology for supporting this national initiative to have exercise as a key component in the health care solution for the prevention and management of chronic disease. The ‘Exercise is Medicine Canada’ program of workshops will help train primary care professionals in physical activity counseling and exercise prescription, and will build on the momentum we created through the previous work supported by the Lawson Foundation disseminating the ‘Diabetes Physical Activity and Exercise’ Resource Manual in partnership with the Canadian Diabetes Association. This work highlights the value of professional application to practice from the research we do here in the Centre of Lifestyle Studies (COLS) at Acadia University". ~ Dr. Jonathon Fowles
