New Heterocyclic Architectures from Cascade Processes

The NSERC-supported green synthetic chemistry program in the Jha laboratory makes use of the unique bond-forming properties of various well-known reactive intermediates in one-pot cascade reactions to construct new chemical compounds. The goal of these reactions is to produce analogs of natural products and bioactive molecules. The specific target compunds selected for this investigation are expected to have a wide variety of shapes and properties. Wherever possible, studies will be done to investigate interesting biological, spectroscopic, and electronic properties of the molecules synthesized. This work includes multistep synthesis, extensive reaction optimization, and chemical structure determination. The Jha lab offers an excellent training environment for student researchers. Six students will receive high quality training in organic synthesis, scientific writing and other research related skills. The results of this project will benefit synthetic chemistry, material science, and the drug development communities.
