This webpage provides information about the Canada Research Chairs Program (CRCP) at Acadia University, including institutional initiatives to increase the diversity of faculty holding Chair positions at Acadia.
The CRCP stands at the centre of a national strategy to make Canada one of the world's top five countries for research and development. By helping Canadian universities become world-class centres of research and research training, the CRCP contributes to enhancing Canada's competitiveness in the global, knowledge-based economy, improving Canadians' health, and enriching our social and cultural life.
Acadia currently has three active Canada Research Chairs. The Program continues to be central to developing capacity associated with our Strategic Research Plan theme areas, focused through the lens of rural and coastal:

Acadia University is committed to promoting equity, diversity and inclusion within its research enterprise, including at each stage of planning for recruiting, hiring and retaining Canada Research Chairs. The CRCP defines equity as “the removal of systemic barriers and biases, and the practice of inclusivity, so that all individuals have equal access to and benefit from the program.” The CRCP defines diversity as “differences in race, colour, place of origin, religion, immigrant status, Indigenous status, ethnic origin, ability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and age.”
Acadia University recognizes that the promotion of equity and diversity necessitates coordinated efforts to ensure the inclusion of all individuals, including those from the CRCP’s four designated groups (FDGS): women, visible minorities, persons with disabilities, Indigenous peoples.

Acadia University’s CRC Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, linked below, was developed by the Division of Research and Graduate Studies to enable swift progress towards addressing the disadvantages currently experienced by individuals from the four designated groups (women, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal Peoples, and members of visible minorities) in accessing and benefiting from the CRC program. Final approval of the plan was granted by the Vice-President Academic on December 15, 2017.

To raise institutional awareness of Acadia’s commitment to fostering and maintaining an equitable, diverse and inclusive research culture, particularly with regards to the CRCP, the institution will implement a communications strategy in 2017-18, detailed below:
- Promote Acadia University’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (to be published online December 2017) to faculty and staff
- Notify faculty and staff of major updates to the CRCP webpage on the RGS website via institutional email lists
- Develop and distribute an annual update on institutional progress towards meeting the objectives of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, to be posted on the RGS website
- When searches for CRCP candidates occur, develop and distribute a handout with critical information related to equity, diversity and inclusion to selection committees, which will also be posted on the RGS website for broader institutional access
In subsequent years, this communications strategy may be revised and updated as needed.
In addition, equity training is offered annually to all faculty and staff with the intention of raising awareness and providing strategies for fostering an equitable, diverse and inclusive research environment on campus.

All participating CRCP institutions must set equity and diversity targets to address the underrepresentation of members of the four designated groups among their chairholders. The CRCP uses this data to monitor the institutions’ progress toward meeting their established targets.
